“Image progression” by Dave Seeley
Then I posed my very patient wife and took some snaps of her to get a real anatomical sense of the gesture. Next I pasted in a Lucasfilm shot of Barriss that I liked. Because photography can appear very “finished” for early stages of an illustration, there is always a danger that the art director will think that I have progressed too far without their input. My Random House art director and I thought that that may have happened at Lucasfilm with our first effort…

…so I overlaid my photo collage and did a pencil drawing to submit to Lucasfilm. The idea was that this was a much more traditional way of doing this, and it would be clear that I was still in the early stages of the image, rather than intent on railroading a finished looking image through the review process. While this does not exemplify my process, I do often print our mid-state collages, and ovelay them with pencil sketching as a way of searching out variations.
