“Image progression” by Dave Seeley
I “grabbed” a bunch of stills from the Geonosis Battle scene in Episode II, and began cutting and pasting limbs and torsos to get the droid I wanted. I lobbied hard for a super-battle droid because they were so much more sinister than the skeletal battle droids that debuted in Episode I. Lucasfilm went with it.
I was able to use the low resolution images from the movie, because I knew I would eventually cover the image in oil paint to fill in the detail and cover the jpeg artifacts. If I was planning a purely digital finish, I’d need high rez shots.
