The Creature

“Creature” by Cristian Patrasciuc
The Concept
The idea for this project came mainly because of the lack in organic model of my portfolio. After making many other things I decided to try this type of projects too. As I have not modeled an organic thing before, I decided to start with a creature. It should give the modeler a bit of freedom, in comparison with a human face or body, for example. Since I am not a talented concept artist, I began searching the Internet for creature concepts that I wil l use as a startingpoint for my work. The final work did not have to be exactly like the concept. The drawing was used only to save me from designing the creature from scratch and assured me that at least theconcept part was good enough. The main concept of the creature was a drawing of Carlos Cabrerathat can be seen on his personal site www.carloscabrera.com.ar
Modeling
For the modeling part I used SoftImage|XSI and ZBrush. First, I have modeled a base mesh in XSI with basic polymodeling techniques. Then I imported the mesh in ZBrush to create the details. The workflow was a normal one: sculpting on the mesh, adding as much detail as one can, then add a new level of subdivisions and so on. There were six levels of subdivisions, which can be seen in Fig.1. The details were added using basic ZBrush techniques like sculpting with ZAdd and ZSub or using alphas and Projection Master.

3Dtutorials.sk recommendation:

To maximise the realism of your 3D creatures we recommend to use high quality animal photo references from the #1 texture website www.3D.sk
