Female face texturing tutorial

“Female face texturing ” by Simon Nuttall
About:This is an on going project to create and rig a female character, the aim is sort of a mixture of realism and stylization, Mental rays fastskin is used for the skin shader and 3dsmax hair and fur is used for the hair although this is still very much work in progress!! I was initially using hand painted textures on this project but it has benefited a great deal from using high quality photo reference from www.3d.sk and I am a little happier with the results being achieved.

The aim of this tutorial is to demonstrate how to use the excellent character reference created by the team at 3d.sk to enhance the quality and realism of your own character design. The tutorial covers the photshop manipulation the relevant images used and uvw adjustment. The tutorial wont be covering initial creation of the project or methods used to unwrap the mapping co ordinate’s so a level of knowledge on this subject is essential, but im sure there will be some of these areas covered in some of the other tutorials on the site and on the web generally

Above shows the unwrapped mapping co ordinates of the head, I don’t think its possible to unwrap the face with completely uniform uvw’s so in some areas a compromise has been achieved where some uvw’s are be slightly squashed an other’s slightly stretched but in areas of high detail such as the lips the nose and the cheeks this had been kept as tight as possible.

As my uvws were fairly symmetrical unlike the the reference (and pretty much every human face on the planet) I initially used only half the face. The polygon lasso too was used to cut out the area I wanted from the ref this excluded the hair line and a small area that would be the side of the face. It was then pasted onto the uvw unwrap layer and the layers transparency was set to about 60% so it becomes possible to judge the correct scale the texture will eventually need to be as we can see the uvw underneath.
