Thumbnailig for quick concept creation

“Thumbnailing for quick concept creation” by Raymon Brugman
Shall we do another one then? Alrighty… This time with some more explanation

So here we are, starting of with a blank frame. And I had no idea what to draw. That’s were most people get scared, afraid of touching that nice white area. What if my first line sucks? Well digitally you can undo it, so just put something in there so it’s less scary to draw.

I’ll start of with this horizon line. Now I’m getting the idea of doing some fantasy related scenery. You see just putting 1 line in here makes already a difference. You now have something to work with.

Added a vertical line, so the paper is divided. And I’m getting the idea of making something with an ancient building.

So blocked out the building I was talking about. Pretty straight forward I think. And as you can see I raised the horizon a bit, so I can have some things in the foreground as well.

With the building blocked out, ideas start to fluid my mind on what to do next. Added some stuff around it, to make it more a scene, but remember details aren’t really important at this stage, that’ll come when working out the thumbnail to a final concept.

And here we are with the end result again. This time I colored it, which is also a huge advantage when working digital, you’ll be able to give the image some mood very quick. The coloring took about 2 minutes longer, but still it’s a nice little panting for about 6 minutes work. But I must admit, if you’re going for speed, you can best use analog materials. And I can’t hammer long enough on the fact, that just putting some lines on a blank piece of paper is the key to thumbnailing and when you are completely out of ideas. When you put some lines on paper, you’re mind automatically starts working on ideas.
