Making of Dragons

“Making of The Dragons ” by Erasmus Brosdau
Afterwards I modeled the back. The tail is also set together with some neck elements. The leg gets ist typical horns and at the end I copied the hand model.
Now you can mirror all parts, if you havent done that already. Now the main dragon body is ready and we can model the wings:

The wings also get the typical dragon elements regarding the design aspects. The procedure of modeling is always the same.
I want the main wing to follow the mechanical bones, so I modeled an extra plane and put it exactly in a position, so that each mechanical bone fits to the bending points of the plane. Afterwars I create real IK bones ,placed them direclty on the mechanical bones and attached them to these, so when i rotate the mechanical ones, the IK bones will follow. Next put a skin modifier on the modeled plane and paint the envelops until you are happy with the deforming result. Then you can move the mechanical bones, and the wing will deform with it.

Step 2: The material.
Because the dragons as a whole should look very polished and new we dont need to unwrap things, but can just assign a single material to it. I decided to make a mix between plastic and steel. For the joints between neck, arms and legs I want to have a kind of pure steel material.
Here we are working with maxwell materials and this works a bit different that normal MAX materials:

This image shows the main material of the dragon „skin“ I dont used any maps to control specular, etc. Also there is no bump chanel needed, a pure procedural material.
