2: HEAD MODELING WITH POSER
By the researches we have made, now we have an idea of our warrior look, therefore, during this head creation step, we have to consider that the face will be covered in part by the helm, hairs and beard.
We always have to esteem, in the illustration, what will have more relevance during all the planning and production process, in order to not waste time and energies on what won’t be visible in the finished work.
With Poser is really simple and fast to obtain pretty good human figure renders. That is why I have chosen to start building the illustration using this software. I wanted 3D to be just a trace for head proportions, expressions and volumes. Poser 6 default model owned all the characteristics necessary to serve the purpose so I decided to use it. It’s a good model with a set up ready to use that permit to create a lot of poses. The interface is really simple.
By selecting the face we find a great number of additive shapes, manageable via sliders, that allows to generate a wide variety of expressions in a funny and immediate way.
In less than an hour we can obtain the render we need to create a layout.
In this stage, Poser is really important also to study rough lighting because the layout we are going to create shall be an important lighting reference.

3: PROPOSALS LAYOUTS
Usually, during planning stage, various proposals layouts are considered to find which one is able to express better the initial intention of work in respect to his more important aspects: the composition, expressivity, title paging, etc. Details are not important because this is just like a pre-visualization step.

4: TAKING PHOTOS FOR SKIN TEXTURES AND HAIRS
For this work I wanted a Photorealistic result. Face textures had to be detailed so I took various face and hairs photos with my digital camera with the purpose to use them as textures and photographic references. I would have used them to build a “puzzle” with photoshop by taking the most adapted photo pieces in respect to every part of the face I had to create. While I was taking the photos I have been careful to maintain a similar lighting of 3d layout I did before in order to not have lights matching problems in the next image retouching stage.
